Vehicular movement between Tumkur and Bangalore on National Highway 4 was completely stopped for nearly an hour on Saturday morning, after around 600 students blocked the highway, following the death of their classmate in an accident.

Asha (16), a 10th standard student of the Government High School in Chikkabidarakallu near Nelamangala, died on the spot after a speeding goods carrier knocked her down near Jindal factory near Chikkabidarakallu on NH 4 around 7.30 a.m. on Saturday.

Asha, a van driver’s daughter, was rushing to school for the Independence Day celebrations. A vehicle transporting mineral water bottles to the city from Tumkur hit the girl and the rear wheels ran over her, said an officer of the Nelamangala police station.

As the news spread, students of the Chikkabidarakallu Government School rushed to the spot and blocked the road. They shouted slogans against the RTO and the police officials for not taking action against the speeding vehicles on the highway.

The local people too joined the students and demanded speed breakers of the concerned authorities at the spot. Additional police force was sent to the spot. The police officials pacified the students and cleared the road block.

Around 2000 vehicles were stuck on the highway. The accused driver managed to escape after abandoning his vehicle. Nelamangala police are investigating the case.
