Expressing dissatisfaction over the performance of the 12 Standing Committees in the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Home Minister R. Ashok said that the chairpersons of all the panels would be changed.
The statement assumes importance as speculations were rife about their continuing to head the panels even as members would be elected afresh.
Speaking to presspersons after the mayoral election here on Friday, Mr. Ashok, who is also the city in-charge Minister, said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would monitor the performance of the freshly constituted committees at least once a month.
“The outgoing committees could have performed better in the five-month term that they had. Lack of team effort was their main drawback. These issues were discussed during the meeting with the councillors on Thursday,” he said. Despite lack of teamwork, he added, individual councillors had worked well for the city's development though at one level they had failed to meet public expectations. “We will ensure that these mistakes do not recur.”
Conversion fee
He added that the BBMP's proposal to collect conversion fee from revenue land owners along with development charges would once again be sent to Revenue Minister G. Karunakara Reddy. The Government will also issue an ordinance soon. The State will press the Governor to accord approval to the Akrama Sakrama Bill apart from approaching the High Court seeking the list of objections filed against it. This, along with the development charges, can help the BBMP mop up additional revenue.
