Residents of M. Ramaiah Jairam (MRJ) Colony of Mathikere, whose homes were demolished on April 3, staged a protest in front of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) head office here on Tuesday.
Demanding compensation from the civic body, they said they have proof that the property belonged to them as the previous government had given them permission to live there permanently.
Residents' claim
The residents of 80 houses claimed that they have been moved to a temporary shed under the railway bridge without being provided with proper alternative accommodation.
In a letter to the BBMP, they requested the civic body to join hands with the Slum Board and the State Government to come out with a plan and give them permanent houses.
The letter also stated that if the BBMP planned to construct any structure on their property, then some kind of compensation should be given to them.
‘Not fair'
“We are not opposing development; but destroying our homes where we have been living for 35 years without giving us an alternative is not fair. Even we have constitutional rights like other citizens. We are poor people, even we have a life, allow us to live." said S.B. Radhakrishna, a resident of MRJ colony.
