They went to the temple leaving their door unbolted on Deepavali in the belief that the Goddess of Wealth would visit them. Instead, it was thieves who turned up, helped themselves to plenty of wealth, and simply bolted.

Sureshkumar Jain, a well-to-do electrical materials supplier in Gandhinagar, and his family members decorated their Lakshmi idol at home with gold worth several lakh rupees on Friday evening and left for the nearby temple after leaving two of their three doors unlocked on Akkipet Main Road here between 8.30 p.m. and 9.10 p.m.

During this brief period, the police said, someone walked in and decamped with 450 gm of gold ornaments, 2 kg silver ornaments and Rs. 10,000 in cash.

The police said they are confident of cracking the case shortly.
