As the segregation of waste has become an important issue in management of solid waste in Bangalore, about 360 houses in Ist ‘R' block Rajajinagar received dustbins on Saturday, which is to help them segregate garbage at source.
The programme, organised by the Bruhat Benagaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), aims to educate people on solid waste management. Inaugurating the programme, MLA N.L. Narendra Babu, said: “Though segregation of waste is a necessary programme in every area, it is difficult to implement it. Presently, management of solid waste is a big challenge in our city.”
Sustained effort needed
According to Nagapura councillor S. Harish, efforts to contain solid waste seemed to end with seminars and meetings. “If people start segregating the waste into dry and wet from today, then our future generation can have a healthy environment,” he said.
Key role
“Our homemakers play a significant role in this process. They spend a lot of time in the kitchen where wet garbage is generated. If they cooperate with us, it will be easy for the garbage collectors to convert it into manure,” Mr. Harish said.
Soon after the programme, the legislator and councillor went door-to-door distributing red (dry waste) and green (wet waste) dustbins.
Meanwhile, B.L. Mahalakshmi, a resident, said: “I welcome this programme and it will be very useful for the people. My family members are aware of this and we will follow it in our house. ”
