BBMP to file caveat to recover leased properties

Come Monday and properties leased out by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) whose lease period has expired or terms violated will see notices affixed on them.

Chairman of the BBMP properties' monitoring committee N. Nagaraj announced this at a meeting with Joint Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners and officials here on Friday, as part of a continuing drive to recover its properties. He also said that the BBMP will file a caveat to prevent these properties from slipping off their hands.

The move comes just days after the committee members sought help from Advocate-General Ashok Haranahalli to draw up a strategy to speed up pending cases of disputed BBMP properties.

More than 300 cases

While there are more than 300 cases of disputed properties pending in court, there are 146 properties in the west and south zones with expired lease period. In some cases, the lease period expired more than 20 years back. The corporation has already recovered Rs. 50 crore worth property.

Though many cases were reported from the east zone too, no information was available as the officials were not present at the meeting.

Petty shops spared

Mr. Nagaraj gave instructions to spare petty shops on footpaths and take a written statement from the others that they would vacate within a stipulated time.

“There are many cases of violations in leased out BBMP property amounting to nearly Rs. 500 crore. Some have rented out the property while others have opened colleges after taking permission for schools,” he said.

‘Maintain register'

The Deputy Commissioner (Estates) suggested that a lease register should be maintained by Assistant Revenue Officers which would consist of a map, the amount and other details. The legal cell of the BBMP will be meeting on Saturday to discuss the issue.
