The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) engineers have been given a 24-hour deadline to remove posters, hoardings and flexes featuring various political leaders across the city.

District Election Officer and BBMP Commissioner M. Lakshminarayana told presspersons here on Thursday that with the model code of conduct in force since Wednesday, the officials had been strictly told to bring down such hoardings and posters.

“I also appeal to all political parties to desist from putting up such publicity material. If any posters, hoardings or flexes are put up in violation of the code of conduct, action will be initiated against the parties concerned,” he said and added that cases under Karnataka Open Places (Disfigurement) Act would also be filed.

He said that the election officials had informed the Information Department to ensure that hoardings and posters displayed outside government offices enlisting the various schemes and achievements of Ministers concerned are brought down immediately. “The BBMP engineers have also been instructed to ensure that the posters that have been pasted on the walls are removed,” he added.

Mr. Lakshminarayan said a circular on the implementation of the code of conduct had been issued. As many as 45,000 officials will be involved in poll duty. Officials had been directed to ensure that no benefits relating to individuals such as title deeds are distributed, and no new projects are taken up. Projects for which work order had already been issued may be taken up, he clarified.
