A massive ‘laddu' weighing over 5.5 tonnes offered by real estate developers to the giant Vinayaka idol during the Vinayaka Chaviti celebrations here in September has received a certificate from Guinness World Records.

“The largest ‘laddu' weighed 5,570 kg (12,278 lb) and was prepared by Suvarnabhoomi Developers Private Limited and presented in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on September 1, 2011,” the certificate issued by Guinness World Records read.

Making the announcement at a press conference here on Friday, general manager Satish Megham said that to celebrate the occasion and to mark the ongoing Ayyappa deeksha, poor feeding for 41 days had begun at Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry and Hyderabad. It would continue up to December 25 with the aim of feeding 20 lakh people.

The ‘laddu' was made by Sri Bhaktanjaneya Sweets at Tapeswaram in East Godavari district as an offering to the idol of the elephant-headed god installed by Sampat Vinayaka Youth Association at a M.V.P. Colony.

A panel that included the Olympic Association, Visakhapatnam secretary M. Syam Babu, a retired professor of Andhra University, DBRNK Benarjee, pathologist Malladi S. Sarma and advocate K. Madanmohan authenticated the weight, measurements and the ingredients used and their quantity as per the direction of the Guinness World Records, Mr. Satish added.
