About 40 makeshift shops and other outlets on the Ramakrishna beach were removed by GVMC officials on Tuesday.

They included those selling shells and snacks on push-carts and other set up stalls erecting poles etc.

Officials said while those selling shells or using push-carts can be allowed, the others have erected poles and raised some temporary structures which was against the rules and also littering the beach.

The action followed after the issue was raised by corporator B.Anuradha at the GVMC meeting on Monday. She said some persons were forcibly collecting money from vendors to do their business. Reacting to the issue, Municipal Commissioner B. Ramanjaneyulu said it had come to his notice that private persons were collecting money to allow vendors do petty businesses. However, those running the shops would be allotted place nearby to run them and rent would be collected.

On Tuesday evening, he assured some of the affected that those vending without raising any structures would be allowed. During his visit on Tuesday morning, Mr. Ramanjaneyulu ordered that four more public toilets be constructed on the Beach Road as a large number of people were visiting the Beach Road. He warned those at Fishing Harbour against public defecation.
