Steps initiated to make city plastic-free

January 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

Gearing up to implement ban on plastic carry bags below 40 microns thickness, Municipal Commissioner Pravin Kumar has constituted a task-force for enforcing the ban in the city.

At a meeting here on Wednesday, he put the plastic carry bag manufacturers and retailers on notice.

Agreeing to comply with the norms, they sought a month’s time to dispose of the existing stock.

Even as he appealed to people to carry their own non-plastic bags, Mr. Pravin Kumar said that all business and commercial establishments should not use the banned bags or plastic in packing.

Seeking the co-operation of all concerned in making the city plastic-free, the Commissioner said the task-force would conduct raids on those violating the rule.

Chief Medical Officer (Health) M.S. Raju made a presentation on the ill-effects of use of plastic.

Septic tanks clearing

At a separate meeting with owners of septic tank clearing tankers, the Municipal Commissioner warned them not to unload the tankers indiscriminately leading to several problems.

They sought 10 days time to comply with the Commissioner’s suggestions.
