The district administration would motivate employees of the Revenue Department to donate blood and organise a separate blood donation camp for them, Joint Collector J. Nivas said here on Sunday.
The administration would try to encourage all the employees in the district to donate blood, the Joint Collector said after donating blood at a camp organised by the employees of the departments of Panchayati Raj and Rural Development at KGH Blood Bank to mark the World Blood Donor Day.
“In view of the fact that the shelf life of blood is only 35 days there is a need to have more blood donation camps with significant numbers and not have all volunteers donate blood at one camp,” Medical Officer in charge of KGH Blood Bank Shyamala suggested.
Responding to the suggestion, the Joint Collector said that the district administration would try to organise a blood donation camp every month for employees.
A database of the employees’ blood group would be maintained to help people in case of emergency, he said.
Appreciating the employees of Panchayati Raj and Rural Development for participating in large numbers in the blood donation camp, he asked them to donate blood regularly.
Incentive mooted
Responding to the suggestion by the Joint Collector on some sort of incentive for the blood donors, KGH Superintendent Madhusudhan Babu said that they would explore the possibility of providing a donor card to the voluntary blood donor against which a unit of blood could be issued in case of emergency to be used in the hospital.
Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officer Maheshwar Reddy, DRDA Project Director Satya Sai Srinivas, DWMA Project Director Sriramulu Naidu, District Panchayat Officer Venkateswara Rao along with more than 100 government employees donated blood.
While a large number of people volunteered to donate blood, some of them had to be turned away for various reasons like not having recovered from illnesses.
Some of the employees had recently undergone surgeries and some were under regular medication for problems like hypertension.
50 units collected
At another blood donation camp organised by the Marwari Yuva Manch in association with the AS Raja Voluntary Blood Bank, 50 units of blood was collected.
A number of women who turned up to donate blood had to be sent back as their blood haemoglobin levels were low, some others were found to be underweight.
The administration will try to motivate all the employees in the district to donate blood
