May 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:56 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

Close on the heels of the police commissionerate and the Department of Women and Child Welfare initiating a project to rescue destitute and mentally challenged women from vulnerable spots, an attempt was made to rape a 25-year-old mentally-challenged woman on Friday morning at Nathayapalem area in the limits of Gajuwaka police station.

The police swiftly moved in based on information and took into custody one person and rescued the woman.

According to DCP Ramgopal Naik, about 20 such women were rescued in the last two days.

“We are working against odds, as most of the women rescued have been turning hostile and violent due to addiction to various substances or due to their mental condition. We have even deployed our women force to assist the staff of the rescue homes,” said DCP Ramgopal Naik.

Most of the women have been shifted to Swadhar Home at Chinnamushidivada and a few have been moved to the government hospital for mental care.
