Visakhapatnam Port, which handled 46.5 million tonne as on Monday, has achieved a new milestone by receiving highest iron ore throughput of 6.8 million tonne among major ports constituting 55 per cent of total handled by all major ports during current fiscal.

In his Republic Day address, port Chairman M.T. Krishna Babu said they had set a new record in handling alumina, thermal coal and manganese ore during the current year.

Complimenting the port workforce, stevedores and the users for putting up concerted efforts to improve the cargo, he said the volume at the port was gradually picking up despite devastation caused by Hudhud Cyclone.

He said the port had registered a growth of about two per cent in traffic during the third quarter of current fiscal compared to previous year. Mr. Krishna Babu said the efforts made by the port family in providing large number of dumpers, loaders and cranes to the district administration and help rendered in bringing back normalcy in the city was well recognised by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

On the ongoing projects, he said many expansion and upgrading projects to cater to the growing needs and to increase efficiency of the port were at various stages of implementation.
