Restrictions on weekends and public holidays only; views of denizens elicited

In an attempt to find a solution to the problems related to heavy traffic and parking lots for vehicles on the Beach Road, the City Police has mooted a proposal to make it one-way. As per the proposal, the stretch from NTR Statue Junction to Park Hotel will be open for plying of vehicles traffic on the weekends and public holidays, while restriction will be imposed on the other side abutting the beach. At present, the stretch is a double road with four lanes.

However, the City Police have made it clear that it’s just a proposal and a final call will be taken only after eliciting the views of the citizens.

According to the authorities, the traffic police are contemplating to make Beach Road a one-way stretch, keeping in mind the high volume of traffic and the problems associated with parking of visitors’ vehicles.

The proposal was mooted to facilitate a free movement for visitors and tourists on Beach Road, they said.

The proposal is to convert the beach side of the road into a parking space and the idea was mooted by Commissioner of Police Mahesh Chandra Laddha, said ACP (traffic) Kinjarapu Prabhakar.

‘WhatsApp, tweet views’

“It’s a proposal for now. We urge denizens to come up with suggestions and write to us at WhatsApp number 9493336633 or tweet @vizagcitypolice. The views can also be posted on the Facebook page: vizagcitypolice,” said ADCP (Traffic) M. Ramesh Kumar.

Giving more details about the proposal, the ADCP said that people could enter Beach Road from the NTR Statue side and park their vehicles on the other side of the road.

Apart from this, visitors also can approach Beach Road from the intersecting stretches such as Cyclone Warning Centre (CWC) down, Pandurangapuram, YMCA or Andhra University High School road and move to the other side of the road to park their vehicles.

“We will go ahead with the proposal if it’s accepted by the citizens. The final decision will be taken only after the suggestions of the people are discussed by the Police Commissioner, in consultation with Collector Pravin Kumar and GVMC Commissioner M. Hari Narayanan and the other officers concerned,” added Mr. Prabhakar.
