Digital printed georgette frocks that has a sequence work, snug-fitting blouses that can be teamed with long skirts, a crop top that can be paired with casual trousers and empire line dresses crafted with a combination of fabrics such as synthetics, chiffons and georgettes embellished with lace work along with a variety of creations were displayed by students as part of the free workshop on design and makeover held here on Thursday.

Presented by JD Institute of Fashion Technology (JDIFT), the session also included a trend bazaar as part of the event. Students felt that the forum threw open its doors to showcase their innovative creations.

A range of designs

The collection displayed a range of designs that kept its focus on bringing the creativity of the students to the fore. “As a domain, fashion designing is heading towards new direction altogether. Moreover, with Vizag to be developed into a smart city, I am sure fashion designers will have better options to explore in the years to come,” hopes R. Nithya, a student of JDIFT.

Most students pursuing B.Sc in Fashion and Apparel Design aspire to create their own label in the field.

“This is quite possible if we can gain good hands-on experience in any reputed apparel store before becoming an entrepreneur. Understanding the nuances of the trade plays a significant role in any business,” confesses Vaishnavi, a second year student of B.Sc (Fashion and Apparel Design).

Although there is considerable rise in the number of girls venturing into the fashion world, a couple of boys hope for a bright future as well.

“Among 22 students in our class, boys form only 10 per cent of the strength. This is mainly because of the negative perception that many have towards the domain,” says Teja, a student who aspires to become a costume designer.

According to K. Pradeep, centre director of the institute, the workshop aims at clearing misconceptions about the stream and creating better awareness on the subject.

“Ironically, fashion world unfurls unlimited options for those who like to discover a creative journey, exploring new opportunities.
