Minister for Handlooms and Textiles P. Shankar Rao on Monday directed the officials to identify suitable land for the establishment of a textile park in Ponduru in Srikakulam district.

While reviewing the progress of the welfare programmes taken up by the department the minister said establishment of a textile park would provide employment to many workers and give more publicity for Ponduru khadi.

He assured that the government would implement mid-day meal for handloom workers also.

The minister said loans worth Rs.297 crore were waived, giving a much-needed relief to workers. District officials including Collector G. Venkatram Reddy participated in the review meeting.

The Minister who arrived here in the evening, will review the problems of handloom weavers at the Collectorate from 10.30 am on Tuesday and also visit industrial estates in the town and Kantakapalli village in the afternoon.

He will leave for Visakhapatnam from there, according to a release.
