Industries in the city which were hit by Cyclone Hudhud are estimated to have suffered a loss of over Rs.10,000 crore, according to preliminary assessment.
The managements expecting to arrive at final figures only after completion of inspection and trial run of various facilities.
Visakhapatnam Port’s loss will be more than Rs.300 crore. Offshore berth to handle liquid cargo has almost collapsed and the loss due to it is put at Rs.200 crore. The breakwater structure bore the brunt of devastation and it will need Rs.70 crore to Rs.80 crore to repair it.
“We will what is the actual loss only after completion of assessment and putting the conveyor belt and other facilities to test once power supply is restored,” Visakhapatnam Port Chairman M.T. Krishna Babu told The Hindu.
All the installations at Hindustan Shipyard Ltd have suffered some damage or the other. The estimated loss will be around Rs.500 crore. The cyclone caused serious damage to the installations at the yard as well as the residential colony. Most of the high-rise workshop roofs were blown away. The dry dock, hull shop and pre-fabrication shops were hit by Hudhud. Even the diesel generators kept for emergency power supply were damaged. A HSL release said the management was making alternate accommodation to the residents of colony and to revive their operations.
HPCL Visakh Refinery, which shutdown its 2,000 MW plant at Parawada, is hopeful of reviving one of its unit once they get power from AP Genco for start-up operation. “The loss estimates including the production loss will be known in a day or two,” an official said.
Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd, the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Port, according to preliminary estimates put the loss at Rs.700 crore. However, union leaders put the total loss at Rs.4,000 crore. The plant needs supply of 60 MW to restart the Captive Power Plant.
The IT industry has almost suspended its operations with big players like Tech Mahindra and Wipro scaling down their operations. The impact of loss to the IT industry including units located at IT SEZ, Madhurawada will be close to Rs.100 crore.
The pharma units, which are spread over Visakhapatnam and its neighbourhood have suffered a loss of Rs.200 crore, according to preliminary estimates.
