Inauguration of ward, village secretariats and sanitation drives mark 150th birth anniversary of the Mahatma

Promotion of non-violence, sanitation campaigns, charity activities marked the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in the city on Wednesday.

Paying tribute to the Father of Nation, Tourism Minister Muttamsetti Srinivasa Rao inaugurated a Ward Secretariat at Marikavalasa and a Village Secretariat at Gambheeram village in Anandapuram mandal. He called upon youth to follow the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi to achieve his dream of ‘Gram Swaraj’, saying that it would be a real tribute to the Father of the Nation.

Collector V. Vinay Chand, Joint Collector Siva Shankar, District Panchayat Officer Krishna Kumari and Zilla Parishad CEO Ramana Murthy were present on the occasion.

Prisoner released

Joint Collector-II M.V. Suryakala exhorted the inmates of the Central Jail to tread on the path of non-violence at a programme organised on the jail premises. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate P. Bhaskara Rao, DLSA Secretary S. Damodar Rao and Jail Superintendent S. Rahul were present. One prisoner was released on the occasion.

A mural art painting depicting the life of the Mahatma at the city railway station was unveiled by Waltair DRM Chetan Kumar Shrivastava. The DRM also displayed the national tourism shield awarded to the city railway station which was adjudged the best tourist-friendly station.

Dredging Corporation of India Limited (DCIL) Managing Director Rajesh Tripathi appealed to all the employees to join the campaign against the single-use plastic. RINL Director (personnel) K.C. Das, Director (finance) V.V. Venugopala Rao, Director (commercial) D.K. Mohanti and president of Visteel Mahila Samiti Sarada Rath paid floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.

Beach clean-up drive

Parents, student and teachers participated in a beach clean-up drive undertaken by Oakridge International School at RK Beach. Principal Biju Baby spoke on the importance sanitation.

The NSS units of St. Joseph’s College for Women organised an awareness programme against the single-use plastic led by the programme officers K. Manikya Kumari and Rajesh. GVMC Zonal Commissioner (Zone IV) P. Simhachalam and principal Sister Shyji were present.

A workshop on the topic of ‘Healthy life – Healthy India’ was organised by Sri Prakash Vidyaniketan for the parents. K. Radhakrishna, MD and chief consultant paediatrician of Omni RK Hospitals spoke about the important milestones in a child’s formative years. School director Chitturi Vasu Prakash was present.
