June 02, 2011 03:31 pm | Updated 03:31 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

The Gangavaram Port Limited (GPL) on Thursday denied reports that the management was not paying salaries to project affected people as part of rehabilitation and resettlement package.

“We would like to state that contrary to the reports that Gangavaram Port is not paying salaries to its certain section of its R and R beneficiary employees from Dibbapalem village, we clarify that the salaries are being deposited in the bank accounts of all employees absolutely on time without fail and any delay,” a GPL press release said.

All the R and R beneficiaries employed with the company were getting wages as per the statutory requirement. Gangavaram Port had also recently increased the wages for the employees as per the provisions of Shops & Establishments Act, the release stated.

“The office of the Labour Commissioner has also ratified that the salaries being paid by Gangavaram Port is as per the legal requirement. We would also like to mention that GPL is an employee-friendly organisation and has always ensured that the well-being of its employees is taken care. Gangavaram Port is keen on an amicable solution to the issues raised by the R and R beneficiary employees provided the demands made are realistic and achievable,” the release added.

It may be recalled that the employees have refused drawing the salaries deposited in their banks for the past few months saying that the amount given to them was very less compared to other industries.
