Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee executive member S. Gopal on Saturday sought a committee headed by a High Court Judge to study implementation of various enactments on labour welfare in various organisations.
Implementation of the committee's recommendations would facilitate suitable fixation of pay scales depending on the seniority of casual and contract workers at the time of absorbing them as permanent employees in Central and State Government establishments, he told reporters here.
Mr. Gopal, who is the Chairman of AP Building and Other Construction Workers' Welfare Board for a second term, said according to Industrial Disputes Act, 1947 it was considered unfair practice if someone was engaged as contract or casual worker in an industry or establishment in a job of permanent nature.
As a Congress leader and INTUC activist, he said he had tried to make hundreds of casual and contract workers of Eastern Naval Command and Naval Dockyard, Hindustan Shipyard Ltd and Visakhapatnam Port permanent. In the city alone, there were two lakh contract and casual workers and their regularisation would benefit their family members a lot.
Mr. Gopal said as part of regularisation in accordance with the labour welfare laws the seniors and juniors were being given same pay and scale.
“To end the discrimination, the recommendations of the committee headed by the High Court Judge will go a long way,” he felt.
