Conveying messages such as ‘shop with your own bags’, ‘we are sharing the planet’ and ‘no plastics’ loud and clear, Junior Chambers International Vizag Achievers organised a rally at P.M. Palem here on Wednesday.

The on-going awareness drive ‘Go green, say no to plastic’ saw a group of volunteers and JCI members carrying placards and walking along the streets of the neighbourhood and explaining the risk factors involved in using non-biodegradable plastics to vendors.

As a part of the endeavour, JCI volunteers visited the roadside shops and general stores in the area and offered alternatives to plastic carry bags.

Objective

“The idea is to spot places where plastic covers are used extensively and encourage the users to go for affordable substitutes. We have already distributed 2,000 cloth bags free of cost to roadside vendors, shop owners, vegetable and fruit sellers along with those who run petty shops because the circulation of plastic bags in such places is high,” said Jyothsna Katari, vice-president of (management) JCI Vizag Achievers.

By hosting similar awareness drives, JCI members intend to make P.M. Palem and Madhurawada plastic-free zones.

Other JCI members, including Ranjeeth Sha, Sheetal Madan, Ravi Kumar and Prasanna Kumar took part in the campaign that concluded with the distribution of shoes, school bags and clothes to underprivileged children in the neighbourhood.
