At a time when the police are struggling to nab the offenders of a series of chain snatching cases reported earlier, five cases of motorbike-borne miscreants targeting women were reported within a radius of 7 km in just one hour, on Friday morning.

The incidents were reported between 8.45 a.m. and 9.45 a.m. from the areas under Airport, Gopalapatnam, Dwaraka and Pendurthi police stations limits in the city.

All the offences were reportedly committed by a gang of two youngsters.

In one incident, A. Padmavathi from Susarla Colony under Airport police station limits was robbed of her 80 gm gold chain.

The miscreants followed her on a bike and snatched away the ornaments when Ms. Padmavathi was on her way to a temple.

The rider was wearing a helmet while the pillion had covered his face with a cloth, she said.

The gang reportedly snatched away a 60-gm gold chain from K. Lalitha Kumar at Bajji Junction area under Airport police station limits. Another woman was also robbed of her 36 gm gold chain at Prahladhapuram under Gopalapatnam police station limits.

Local gang suspected

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (crimes) V. Suresh Babu said that two more chain snatching cases were reported from Chinamushiriwada and Sujathanagar areas under Pendurthi police station limits.

“The gang robbed gold chains weighing more than 240 gm in the five incidents. We have collected the CCTV footage which shows the two accused escaping from the spot after committing the crime. We suspect that some local gang might be involved in the offences, as they appear to be quite familiar with the topography of the areas,” Mr. Suresh Babu added.

It may recalled that the city was rocked with similar four chain snatching incidents on July 19 this year which took place between 8 a.m. to 8.45 am with the same modus operandi.
