Defence personnel from all three services and physically challenged persons need not pay toll tax on the highways.

The National Highways Authority of India has issued a direction across the country exempting defence service personnel and the physically challenged with more than 40 per cent handicap. Members of Territorial Army and NCC cadets travelling on duty too have been exempted and the vehicle carrying them need not pay toll tax.

The vehicle carrying an in-service personnel and members of his family need not pay toll tax on any of the toll gates on the highways, District Collector N Yuvaraj said citing a directive of the NHAI.

Strict action would be taken against any contractor collecting toll tax from these exempted class of persons and if required the contract would be cancelled, the Collector said.
