Tricycles, scholarships and equipment, required by schools for the physically challenged, all worth ₹ 25 lakh, donated by the Coromandel Fertilisers Employees Union as part of its social responsibility programme, were given away by Joint Collector G. Srijana at a programme organised here on Thursday.
Commending the gesture of the trade union, the Joint Collector said it was normally believed that trade unions are meant for protests and struggles on behalf of workers. But, the Coromandel Fertilisers Employees Union has set an example to other unions through its social service programme.
She said that corporate social responsibility activities are normally conducted by companies and industries but it was commendable that workers were conducting such a programme by contributing funds. She hoped that others would emulate the union gesture.
Presiding over the meeting, union president Ch. Narasinga Rao said the union has been organising blood donation programmes for the past 10 years at Coromandel Fertilisers Limited (CFL). As many as 252 of the 580 employees and officers of the company, had donated blood at the camp.
Former Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University K.V. Ramana, union general secretary SM Bhasha, company vice presidents M. Kumaresan, Ameer Alvi, Jayasri Satagopan and R.V. Subrahmanyam participated.
