Concealed cabling: his parting gift

January 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:10 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

Outgoing Chairman and Managing Director of Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (APEPDCL) M.V. Seshagiri Babu will be moving out of the Discom after initiating the process for the underground cabling network.

Mr. Seshagiri Babu, who joined the Discom in September 2013, saw three major cyclones – Helen, Phailin and Hudhud -- and will now be taking charge as Joint Collector of Krishna district.

PFC Consultancy Limited, a subsidiary of Power Finance Corporation, has been given the task of preparing the DPR for laying underground cables for 11 kv and 33 kv lines, in all the three zones in the city. The project is estimated to cost between Rs. 1,000 and 1,500 crore. The discom is also going ahead with the replacement of about one lakh electrical poles with RCC spun poles. A tender for 30,000 poles will be floated shortly, says Mr. Seshagiri Babu.

Going hi-tech, the Discom has also prepared an expression of interest (EOI) for Spatial Data Management (SDM). “It is digitisation and mapping of the entire network using GIS technology. Using mobile application it can be operated from hand-held tablets. The SDM also can be integrated to disaster management system,” says Mr. Seshagiri Babu. He has worked on strengthening the disaster management system and IT department.

Billing system

It was during his tenure that the Eastern Power Centralised Customer Care and Billing system was launched, the video conferencing facility across division officers were set up, the SMS alert system was launched and the electronic project monitoring software incorporated.
