It was like any other Saturday evening for those who stepped into a shopping mall until the venue turned into a dance floor for about 15 minutes.

With a string of peppy music blaring in the background, a group of students took turns to shake a leg, while the audience cheered them all along. After a few fast paced numbers, the mood changed as boys and girls join for a slow romantic song in salsa style. Within a few minutes, another group of youngsters erupted into dance, keeping pace with the fast beats.

The flash mob meant to commemorate the spirit of Vizag people for their resilience in fighting against Cyclone Hudhud drew the attention of the shoppers at CMR Central Shopping Mall that was bursting at the seams. “It has been almost a year since the very severe cyclonic storm had hit the coast. What made the difference is how people have bounced back with dignity. That is the reason why we wanted to organise the flash mob,” said K. Pradeep, centre manager of the institute.

For students who participated in the flash mob, it took a couple of weeks to get trained in the choreography that also meant to promote fashion scene in the port city. “Fashion in the city is evolving. Though this is the first time that I am participating in a flash mob for a cause, what remains interesting is that how youngsters have become more open to experimenting with new styles,” said Mounica, a student of the institute.

Fashion show

The flash mob was concluded with a fashion show that brought out a collection of casual wears including leather jackets and trendy pullovers.

With organisers taking the flash mob route to convey their point of view, students felt that it gave them a chance to showcase what fashion means to them. “As far as I am concerned, fashion is something that makes me feel comfortable as well as confident,” said Namrata, another student.
