Blood donation camp to meet summer requirement

May 16, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:03 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

Hoping to collect at least 1,000 units of blood, a camp is being organised on Saturday and Sunday. The aim is to overcome acute shortage of blood usually experienced during summer months.

Blood banks, both government-run and private, or those run by social service organisations depend only on voluntary donation. In summer, with colleges closed for vacation, it becomes difficult to get donors, says secretary of Rotary Blood Bank D.S. Prakasa Rao.

Blood banks run short of the requirement to meet unavoidable and emergency surgical interventions and in cases of road accidents.

The Rotary Blood Bank, along with NTR Trust Blood Bank, is organising the two-day camp at CMR Shopping Mall at Maddilapalem from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on both the days.

“Chairman of CMR Group M. V. Ramana has agreed to provide us space,” says president of Rotary Club Port City P.L.K. Murthy. “We are planning to send some of the units collected to earthquake-hit Nepal. O. Naresh Kumar of Vizag Development Council and the CMR Group have promised to take care of the logistics,” he says.

Oppressive heat dissuades donors from stepping out. We hope the mall ambience would convince the visitors to donate blood, says Mr. Prakasa Rao.
