A series of measures have been taken to help the city do well in Swachh Bharat Survekshan having achieved fifth rank in all-India rankings in 2015.

Swachh Survekshan team will conduct the survey this year from January 7 to 9.

Ahead of the survey, setting an example in the State, 55 community toilets were modernised by retrofitting, Municipal Commissioner M. Hari Narayanan said here on Thursday.

Visakhapatnam received three awards of the State government in cleanliness on October 2.

Visakhapatnam, Nellore and Guntur are the three cities that received merit certificates for being open-defecation free from the Central government.

Among the other measures are: arrangements to set up organic waste converters in six rytu bazaars, collecting kitchen waste separated as dry and wet from households in model colonies in the wards of the city, placing dustbins and dumper bins to help improve cleanliness in commercial areas, the RTC Complex and the Railway Station.

Also several steps have been taken for re-mediation of the sprawling Kapuluppada dump-yard. The survekshan team will visit the dump-yard and post pictures online.

Mr. Hari Narayanan said documentation on continuous monitoring, reviews and field visits was in place.

The various cleanliness programmes as indicated in the Swachh Bharat Mission, the survekshan guidelines and other suggestions have been taken up.

The Commissioner hoped that GVMC would again achieve top ranking by virtue of the results achieved with people’s participation and the dedicated work of officials and staff.
