An 80-year-old retired Central Government employee was arrested on Monday on the charge of indulging in land fraud when he was secretary of a house building society.
The accused, Dabbiru Gowri Shankara Rao, was secretary for 20 years of the Central Excise and other Central Government Employees’ Cooperative House Building Society established in 1974.
The society had acquired four layouts for 828 members, but the accused, misusing his position, had allegedly transferred six plots in the names of his family members and relatives and later occupied a storm water channel and created another two plots, which he had sold to outsiders.
The fraud surfaced after his term as secretary ended.
Office-bearers of the society initiated an inquiry against him and based on the inquiry report, Divisional Cooperative Officer P. Durga Prasad lodged a complaint with the PM Palem police.
During investigation, it was found that Gowri Shankara Rao had committed fraud, misappropriated society funds, and sold away eight plots violating the society laws, the police said.
