BJP leader and former MP Kambhampati Haribabu has said that the 10% reservation being given to economically weaker sections (EWS) among the upper castes will not affect the reservations for other castes.

Speaking to the media after the party’s membership drive at Seethammadhara on Wednesday, Mr. Haribabu said some parties were spreading false propaganda that the Modi government would do away with the reservations in a phased manner. Asking people not to believe them, he said that quota would be continued till equality was achieved among all sections of the people.

The 10 % reservation in educational institutions and jobs being extended to economically poor among OCs (Other Castes) was in addition to the existing quota for various categories and it would not deprive the later in any way. “Eligible persons among OCs should get certificate from the Tahsildar concerned and avail of the quota,” he said.

Confusion

He said that there was some confusion in Andhra Pradesh as 5 % reservation was announced for the Kapus by the TDP government which was caught in a legal dispute.

The Kapus were seeking the inclusion of the community in the BC list. They should now decide whether they want 10 % for economically poor in the Kapu community or inclusion in the BC list, Mr. Haribabu said.

The State government has to issue a G.O. regarding the implementation of the 10 % reservation for EWS among OCs. It is already being implemented in Telangana and recently, it was implemented during the admissions into MBBS courses in Andhra Pradesh.

Replying to queries, Mr. Haribabu said that leaders from other parties were joining the BJP attracted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. On the charge that corrupt leaders from other parties were joining the BJP to evade CBI raids, he said the CBI would continue to do its duty.

Former MLA P. Vishnu Kumar Raju, senior leader of the party P.V. Chalapathi Rao and city president M. Nagendra were among those who were present on the occasion.
