The APIIC colony has remained inundated for the past few days owing to continuous rainfall in Vijayawada.

Coming down on the government and the local body for their failure in preventing inundation of colonies due to rains in the city, CPI(M) leaders said on Tuesday a public meeting by the party, the CPI and the Jana Sena to discuss the problems would be held on August 26.

Addressing a press conference, party senior leader Ch. Babu Rao asked why the Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who talks about real-time governance, was unable to see the inundated colonies in the city which is very much part of Amaravati.

He said buoyed up with awards and recognition, the government and the elected representatives ignored civic amenities.

“Delay in the construction of stormwater drains has added to the woes of the citizens. In fact, the extent of the area that gets inundated has increased as the drains are not properly planned,” he said.

“The Municipal Administration department decided to reduce the extent of the drain project by 150 km as against the 440 km for reasons not known. The government should release a white paper on the project immediately,” he said.

He called for an all-party meeting to address the inundation and the landslips.

He said about 50 vulnerable locations had been identified on the hill slope areas and the corporation should immediately begin taking precautionary measures to avoid mishaps. Former corporator and city secretary D. Kasinath was present.
