The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) is lagging behind in implementation of the Individual Household Toilets (IHTs) project, as the civic body so far has built only 90 units against the requirement of 950 IHTs. The Corporation officials however, claim that rest of the units will be constructed by December.
Under the Swachha Bharat Mission, the government is providing necessary assistance including financial sanctions for constructing of IHTs in slums and other localities in the city.
To study the implementation of the project, Jayaradhe and Sarika Saluja, representatives of the World Toilet Organisation on Saturday visited Kandrika on the city fringes and interacted with the beneficiaries.
The objective of the project was to check open defecation and promote use IHTs among the households. Apart from providing financial assistance to SHGs , the construction works has also been handed over to the groups, said Information, Education and Communication expert T. Smita Bhanu, according to a press release.
During their visit, the WTO representatives spoke to the residents and took their feedback on the initiative taken by the government. The residents, especially women, expressed happiness over the facility provided at their houses. Later, the representatives visited Gandhinagar to study the maintenance of community toilets.
