Tributaries save the day for A.P. farmers

July 17, 2014 12:34 am | Updated 12:34 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Krishna delta farmers are fortunate enough to receive water to raise seedbeds though the Krishna River Management Board stopped release a week ago. The Vijayawada Irrigation Circle authorities have been releasing between 3,300 and 6,150 cusecs of water received from the tributaries that discharge into Krishna below the Nagarjuna Sagar Project (NSP). Flood waters from Muniyeru, Wyra and Kataleru have come to the rescue of farmers in Krishna delta. The release of water for Krishna delta was stopped on July 9, but releases continue to Alimineti Madhava Reddy Project (AMRP) even now. The release to AMRP was raised from 900 cusecs to 1,350 cusecs on July 12 and was brought down to 340 cusecs only on Wednesday following heavy rains in Telangana.

Scanty rain was recorded in the delta districts of West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam on Wednesday also. Highest rainfall of 14 mm was recorded at Kandukur in Prakasam district.

In Guntur district, Sattenpalli was the only place to received 5 mm. In Krishna, the rain was more scattered with Nandigama receiving 3.2 mm, Vijayawada 2.4 mm, Gudivada, 1.4 mm and machilipatnam receiving 0.1 mm. In West Godavari, Eluru town received 1 mm, Narapur 0.7 mm, Bhimadolu 0.4 mm and Tadepalligudem 0.2 mm.
