BJP MP G.V.L. Narasimha Rao requested Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu during zero hour on Monday to permit translation of the proceedings of Parliament into regional languages.

As a first step, Mr. Narasimha Rao said the answers to questions could be given in one regional language of the members’ choice and in 22 languages with some time gap.

The MP observed that by circulating the proceedings of Parliament in local languages, the government would be able to give a wider publicity to its programmes and achievements of the Narendra Modi government to the benefit of those who could not understand English and Hindi which were the only medium of official communication now.

The services of the Press Information Bureau could be availed for translating the business transacted in Parliament.

The fact that the usage of regional languages on social media was rapidly increasing should be kept in mind, Mr. Rao said.
