A trader from Vijayawada, Anil Kumar Chowdhary (40), his wife (35) and son (13), reportedly committed suicide at a hotel in Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu on Sunday.

The exact address of Mr. Chowdhary and the details of his extended family were not known. Kanyakumari Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Nanda Kumar said the family had checked into Hotel Kanya in Kanyakumari at midnight on June 5 and were found dead on Sunday.

Kanya Hotel manager Kaliappan told The Hindu on Monday that the family went for an outing a couple of times, but their door had been found closed since Sunday afternoon. Around 4 p.m., the hotel staff knocked on the door and alerted police, as there was no response. Police broke open the door to find all the three dead in the room, he said.

In a suicide note left behind, Vijay Kumar said they were taking the extreme step, as they had suffered losses in the family business. Vijay Kumar and his wife hanged themselves after poisoning their son, the DSP said.

“In the receptionist’s register, Vijay Kumar mentioned that he was a native of Manchalu Thurai Post, Vijayawada, and gave his mobile number as 8686884382. But, his phone was not found in the room,” Mr. Kaliappan said.

Mr. Nanda Kumar said the bodies were preserved at Asaripallam Government Medical College Hospital in Nagercoil. Relatives of the deceased may contact the DSP on his mobile (09498188393), the Kanyakumari Circle Inspector (8903546200) or Sub-Inspector (04652-246224), he added.
