In a major breakthrough, the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF), with the help of the Law and Order police, arrested Harvinder Singh and his associate Rinku Kumar, who robbed gold and diamond ornaments worth ₹36 lakh from a woman passenger in Simhapuri Express recently. The incident created a sensation in railway circles.
The two were wanted in as many as 12 cases in Andhra Pradesh and also in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana and other States, said Additional Director General (Railway Police) K.R.M. Kishore Kumar said at a press conference here on Tuesday.
Recently, Harvinder and Rinku boarded Simhapuri Express at the Secunderabad station. When the victim alighted the train at Ongole, she found the jewellery missing, and a case was registered by the GRP.
During investigation, police observed the CCTV footage and suspected the role of Harvinder and Rinku, who were on the same train.
“The GRP and the RPF went to Khader village in Bijnor district of Uttar Pradesh to pick up the accused. When police faced resistance in the village, they took the help of the local police, and rounded up Havinder and Rinku,” the Additional DG said.
Modus operandi
The modus operandi of the accused is to travel in long-distance trains. Harvinder would lift the bag or open it and hand over the booty to Rinku, who would get down at some point, said GRP Superintendent of Police K.V. Mohan Rao.
Later, Harvinder would catch a flight to UP. They would sell the gold, diamond and silver jewellery and share the money. The gang was earlier arrested by the Visakhapatnam and Mahabubnagar railway police, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner S.R. Gandhi said.“In 11 other cases, police recovered about ₹35 lakh from the gang. This is a major recovery in the Railways,” Mr. Gandhi said.
