In view of the incessant rains resulting in floods, safety of the children in schools is an area of serious concern.

Commissioner of School Education K. Sandhya Rani has instructed Regional Joint Directors, DEOs and Principals to initiate immediate measures to ensure safety of children.

In a letter to the officials, she said safety and health measures should be paramount. Rain water gushing into school premises might lead to contamination of drinking water, she pointed out, directing the officials to take preventive measures and collaborate with the local gram panchayat authorities for supply of safe drinking water. She wanted headmasters to oversee clearance of stagnated water in the premises to prevent outbreak of diseases like dengue and malaria.

In areas where school buildings were in a dilapidated condition, children should be shifted to safe destinations and first aid kits be made available at every school.

She wanted the officials to take special care to see that the mid-day meal was prepared in hygienic conditions and ensure that the food was served hot. In case of exigencies, she said the officials should take immediate remedial steps.
