The Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel on Sunday seized gold ornaments weighing 20 kg worth Rs. 5 crore from two persons on the suspicion that the gold was allegedly being smuggled from Tamil Nadu to Andhra Pradesh.

According to GRP Circle Inspector T. Srinivas Reddy and RPF Circle Inspector Chakravarthy, the police during a routine check on the platforms, spotted two persons identified as Nirmal Jain and Mulchand from Chennai, moving around suspiciously. Police found the gold ornaments packed in bags, which the two were carrying and detained them.

During questioning, the two said they were into jewellery business and were supplying the ornaments to bullion traders in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

GRP Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) P. Ramakrishna said the two had come to Vijayawada to show the models of gold ornaments to the local traders and book orders. “They came by GT Express and were waiting on platform number 6. The two produced some bills and documents in connection with the gold they were carrying, which were not in order. We are verifying them,” the DSP said.
