City canals may soon turn into waterways where passenger commutation services would be offered for the citizens if the plans of the civic body work.

Municipal Commissioner J. Nivas has said that massive plans are being made to transform the city canals into the most happening places of the city. The civic body is going to make a trial run to test the waters of the Bandar Canal which passes along M.G. Road for commuter transportation through boats.

“We are going to try waterways. In about 10 days we will be blocking water flow of Bandar Canal to have sufficient water level between Yanamalakuduru and One Town and run a trial of a passenger boat. All that we need is a boat, identification of ideal pick- up and dropping stops. We also need to ensure that the boat comfortably passes from beneath the bridges. All these will be checked during the trial run. It will be better if we use the canals for passenger transportation instead of having fun boat rides and other activities,” Mr. Nivas said.

Diversion of drains

“Good patronage from the public will make the project viable. This will be a big thing to do for the city and people’s cooperation is also needed,” said Mr. Nivas stressing that it is possible only after stopping the inflow of sewage into the canal.

Eluru Canal

“The immediate action needed is to divert the drains. There are 52 drainage inlets in Bandar Canal. Three major causes of pollution are dumping of garbage from the bridges and canal bund houses and sewage inlets,” Mr. Nivas said.

“The Eluru Canal which is now National Waterway 4 will be developed in the next phase.”
