Man killed in minor landslide in Vijayawada

A man was killed in the early hours of Monday after a boulder crashed into his house located on the hill slope area at Sunnapubattilu Centre near Siddhartha Nagar here in Vijayawada.

The incident occurred following incessant rainfall, set off by cyclone Phethai, for hours that caused a minor landslide triggering a boulder to roll onto the asbestos roof of the victim’s house.

According to revenue officials, the boulder tumbled down on the victim identified as R. Durga Rao, a carpenter, when he was sleeping in the house. He died on the spot due to severe injury.

Responding to the incident district Collector B. Lakshmikantham ordered the revenue officials concerned to provide an immediate relief of ₹50,000 to the victim’s family.

Vijayawada East MLA Gadde Rammohan Rao along with revenue officials consoled the family of the victim and handed over the cash.

The city received 127.7 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours as on 8.30 am in the morning, according to IMD. On the other hand, several areas and roads got inundated following the rainfall.
