High Security Number plates to be a must soon

Transport authorities all set to make it mandatory across the State

January 06, 2015 01:02 am | Updated 01:02 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

After the initial hiccups in introducing High Security Number Plates (HSNP), the Transport Department is now making efforts to make such number plates mandatory for the vehicles.

The HSNP, equipped with snap locking system and other safety features, are tamper proof and cannot be removed from vehicles unless broken. There were few glitches such as supply of the plates but things have been set right. Installation of HSNP has already commenced in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam a few days ago and in about 10 days, it would be made mandatory in other districts too, said Joint Transport Commissioner S.A.V.Prasada Rao.

The company, short-listed for installing the number plates, would operate a stall at the RTO offices and affix the plates to vehicles. Number plates, which are fixed by the company at RTOs, would be genuine and vehicle owners should not fall prey to the tricks of unauthorised number plate makers in the market, he told to the media on Monday.

After launching vehicle registration seeding with Aadhaar, the department is now working on sending SMS alerts to vehicle owners reminding them about permit renewals, tax payments, registration renewals and etc. New vehicle owners would be getting alerts about the registration number allotted to them and the status of their applications. A trail run was underway and very shortly, the project would take off, he informed.

Reviewing the Aadhaar seeding, Mr. Rao said of the 76 lakh vehicles in the State, only 10 lakh has been seeded till date. Plans are afoot to complete the seeding in a month and for the convenience of vehicle owners, the department had set up vehicle registration seeding centres at many fuel stations across the State. Further, vehicle owners could log onto www.aptransport.org for seeding personally, he added.
