The two hikes in petrol and diesel prices within the last 15 days triggered a series of protests in several districts on Saturday. The opposition parties burnt effigy of the Centre, saying that the move would burn a hole on pocket of common man.
CPI (M) activists led by Vijayawada city Secretary Ch. Babu Rao took the streets of Vijayawada and burnt an effigy of the Centre on Besant Road.
Mr. Babu Rao said people now have of shell out Rs. 8 more for a litre petrol and Rs. 5 per a litre diesel.
Voicing their dissent through placards and heavy sloganeering, Left activists enacted an innovative skit on the theme - 'petrol is costlier than gold' in Tirupati.
They measured a bottle of petrol against gold on weighing balances to explain how dearer the fuel had become in the recent times.
They also carried a two-wheeler tied to a bamboo stick in a procession, to ridicule the Centre.
