Municipal Administration Minister P. Narayana said efforts were being made to establish one waste-to-energy plant in each district to address the garbage disposal issue. This apart setting up of sewerage treatment plants (STPs) would be accorded priority to ensure cleanliness in the cities and towns across the State.

Participating in the Swacchh Bharat programme at Police Control room here on Thursday, the Minister said targets have been set to establish the waste energy plants in each district by March 2019. In addition to this, toilets would be established in all the households to control open defecation.

He also said efforts should be made to treat waste water from domestic sector by establishing sewerage treatment plants, enabling to use the treated water for agriculture purposes. The State government was emphasising on this three aspects as part of the Swachh Bharat programmes, he said.

Later, inspecting the gardening works on the canals bunds, he appreciated the measures taken by Vijayawada Municipal Corporation in taking up gardening works and instructed the officials to ensure the bunds to be garbage and litter free.

He also welcomed the efforts of voluntary organisations in taking up Swacch Bharat programmes in the city and appealed to the people to desist from the practice of fixing posters at public places.

Vijayawada East MLA Gadde Ramamohan Rao, Mayor Koneru Sridhar and VMC Commissioner G. Veerapandian participated in the programme, said a press release.
