With the Kanakadurga flyover construction works expected to commence shortly, Mayor Koneru Sridhar wanted the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials to take steps for shifting the decades-old pipelines and widening of roads to ensure free flow of traffic.

At a meeting with the corporation’s engineering section here on Thursday, Mr. Sridhar instructed the officials to prepare plans for shifting the pipelines, which were an obstruction for laying foundation of the flyover pillars. The officials said that an action plan was already prepared, adding that the estimated cost would be around Rs.18 crore for shifting the nine pipelines.

Officials explained that vehicular traffic heading to Visakhapatnam from Hyderabad would be diverted via Ibrahimpatnam, Nuzvid and Hanuman Junction. Similarly, traffic entering the city would be diverted via Gollapudi, Nynavaram Flyover and Inner Ring Road.

The Mayor directed the officials to take up road widening on the 15 identified roads through which the traffic would be diverted to avoid traffic jams and inconvenience to motorists.

Sanitation

Earlier, he conducted a meeting with the health and sanitation section over the sanitation conditions in the city. Chief Medical Officer Gopi Naik informed the Mayor that efforts were being made to ensure cleanliness on the main roads and workers were working in three shifts round-the-clock.

Further, Mr. Naik said awareness was being created among shopkeepers and commercial establishments over the need to dump garbage in dumper bins or hand over the same to sanitary workers. Pamphlets were being distributed to the shop owners about establishing dust bins at their respective premises to facilitate the sanitary workers in collecting the trash.

He also said sanitary inspectors’ phone numbers were being given to the shopkeepers to inform them about garbage clearance.
