The city unit of Communist Party of India-Marxist took part in march-past carrying 50-metre party flag to mark its 50 years of existence, in the city on Saturday. The CPI(M) activists and workers wearing red shirts and caps took part in the march past from Ratham Centre to Lenin Centre.
On the occasion, CPI(M) district secretary R. Raghu said that the party always stood by the commoner during its 50 years journey in the country. The CPI(M) was on forefront in agitating against anti-people polices and economic onslaught on the common man. Development came to a grinding halt in all spheres of life. In fact, there was retrogression due to lopsided policies of respective governments, he said.
The land reforms initiated by the governments did not yield desired results and majority of the farmers don’t have land of their own even today. ‘Land to the tiller’ remained on papers though 67 years passed after nation got independence. The BJP led NDA government was attempting to instigate communal hatred. The government was adopting policies that hurt the sentiments of minorities -- Muslims and Christians. Public agitations were the only way out to keep the secular fabric intact, he said. CPI(M) city secretary Ch. Babu Rao said that the rally was organised as prelude to party state meetings coinciding with 50 years of existence.
