Farmers and property owners in Buddavaram village under Gannavaram mandal on the city outskirts are demanding that the government announce compensation details before acquiring lands for the expansion of Gannavaram airport.

The Krishna district administration has already served notices to nearly 180 farmers and property owners in the village for acquiring more than 190 acres.

The Land Acquisition Officer has also conducted an enquiry into the objections pertaining to the land acquisition process and submitted a report to the district administration.

“Farmers are not against parting their lands for Gannavaram airport expansion. But, the government has to declare compensation details, including the modalities related to the land acquisition, basic value of the land and etc,” former Zilla Parishad Chairman Kadiyala Raghava Rao said.

All the farmers and land holders, who received the notices organised a meeting at Ramalayam at Davaji Gudem on Monday to discuss the government’s move to acquire lands.

They said that there were many issues that remained unclear and it was high time the authorities give explanations on those issues.

“For instance, market price of lands in Kesarapalli, Ajjamupudi and Buddavaram is said to be Rs.1 crore per acre. What price the government will fix is still remains a concern,” said Chintala Sitaramaiah, a farmer.

Land value

“When we raised such queries, authorities replied that market value would be fixed at an appropriate time according to guidelines of the new Land Acquisition Act,” he said.

More importantly, the notification was issued under the provisions of the old Land Acquisition Act, while a new one is likely to come into force in the next few months.

“The government should announce the time limit for payment of compensation or sanctioning alternate land. It will be unfair to acquire lands, without disclosing these details,” says another farmer.
