Commotion prevailed on Tuesday at a meeting jointly organised by Rashtra Rythanga Samakiya and Bharatiya Kisan Sangh where the handing over of land for the new capital came up. The participants accused one another of remaining silent spectators even as the government “robbed them of their livelihood”.

Representatives of farmers’ organisations from all 13 districts attended the meeting.

While the impact of the recently proposed Palamuru project on agriculture in the State was high on the agenda, issues facing farmers in the backdrop of land acquisition and land pooling were subjects of hot debate.

Injustice meted out

The view of a participant from the capital region that gross injustice was being done to farmers was objected to by a member of Telugu Rythu, who said that was not how other farmers in the region felt.

“There is no point trying to convince representatives of farmers’ associations, as they are already enlightened,” the Telugu Rythu member said, adding that farmers in the capital region were happy to part with their land under the land pooling system.

Going by the opinion of majority of representatives, the meeting took the stand that the government should not acquire multi-crop land in the capital region through land pooling.

Rythanga Samakiya State president Yerneni Nagendranath said those who spoke up for farmers were being branded as “traitors”.

He added that despite TDP leaders’ claim that irrigation works will be taken up only after the compensation due to farmers for land acquisition was paid, construction had started for the Pattiseema Project by acquiring fertile land.

Canal works

Telugu Rythu president Chalasani Anjaneyulu said the Polavaram Right Canal works would be taken up only after farmers were given full compensation.
