The Women and Child Welfare authorities on Tuesday thwarted an early age wedding under Challapalli police limits.

The 13-year-old girl of the town was allegedly forced by her parents and relatives to accept the wedding with a youth belonging to Prakasam district.

The girl is pursuing class IX. On Tuesday, she lodged a complaint with the ICDS authorities over the phone that she had been brought to Challapalli for the engagement ceremony. The wedding has been scheduled for October 11.

ICDS Project Director K. Krishna Kumari told The Hindu that the parents had planned the engagement ceremony in their relatives’ house at Challapalli to avoid any disturbance.

The girl was handed over to her parents after taking her statement, Ms. Krishna Kumari said, adding the ICDS and police would counsel the parents.
