Keesarapalli in Gannavaram mandal donated his kidneys and liver to three recipients in various hospitals on Tuesday.
The Appropriate Authority for Cadaver Transplantation (AACT) based at NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS) facilitated the transplantations under the Jeevandan programme.
Mr. P. Nagababu (24) fell from a building at his native place five days ago and suffered serious injuries. He was declared brain-dead at the Pinnamaneni Siddhartha Institute of Medical Sciences (PSIMS) at Chinavutapalli where he was admitted after the mishap. His family agreed to donate his organs on Monday, NTRUHS Vice-Chancellor T. Ravi Raju, who heads AACT, said at a press conference here.
Formalities such as the mandatory declaration of the person as brain-died twice within six hours were finished and the harvesting of organs was completed on Tuesday. One kidney was sent to Aayush Hospital in Vijayawada and the other to the Guntur City Hospital. Mr. Nagababu’s liver was sent to Sai Vani Hospital in Hyderabad.
Initially, Fortis Hospitals in Chennai was to have received the organs, but logistical problems prevented it. Similar constraints were faced in transporting the organs to a hospital in Kerala.
It was the 10th transplantation procedure that AACT has conducted since Andhra Pradesh launched its own Jeevandan programme.
The Jeevandan programme’s chief transplant coordinator G. Krishna Murthy and PSIMS principal P.S.N. Murthy also spoke at the press conference.
