Asian Waterfowl Census, also known as Annual Bird Census, will be taken up in Kolleru Wildlife Sanctuary and other water bodies in the State from January 23.
Bird Watchers Society of Andhra Pradesh (BSAP) and the Forest Department officials will take up the survey with the help of locals, said BSAP secretary Shafatulla.
The annual survey would be taken up in all wetland areas and mangroves to count the waders and other birds nesting in marine ecosystem. BSAP will submit the report to Netherlands-based Wetlands International.
Kaikalur Forest Range Officer (Wildlife Management Division) A. Sunil Kumar said BSAP members, Forest Department staff, locals and like-minded people will visit Atapaka Bird Sanctuary during the five-day survey programme. The team will go into the lake and collect data on different species of birds nesting in the fresh water lake.
The team visited Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary and Pulicat Bird Sanctuary in Nellore district and Uppalapadu bird habitat located in Guntur district and collected data. Rampachodavaram Forest Range Officer (FRO) P.B.N. Kumar said about 10 teams comprising NGOs, BSAP and the Forest Department personnel would visit Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary in East Godavari on January 26. The Forest Department has arranged an audio visual presentation on different species of birds nesting in the sanctuary, feed and other details to the teams. Boating would be provided to team members for conducting the survey.
The team headed by BSAP vice-president J.V.D. Murthy, members Sudhir, Anitha and Saradha will take up the survey in Krishna Wildlife Sanctuary, located at Avanigadda in Krishna district, said the society secretary.
